Senior's Song

  • Feelin: stupid
  • To Do: try and recover
  • Thinking about: a paper due at 6 PM

I’ve checked everywhere and my 512 MB black SanDisk Cruzer, the one with my capstone project, all my ResLife files, and job hunt information, is missing. I left the flash drive plugged in a computer lab sometime Friday afternoon on my to a meeting . When I realized I lost it, I went back to the lab and it was closed. The following morning I checked again and the labbie sent me across campus to a closed central office.

On Monday when the office reopened, I sang my pitiful song and was rewarded with tips on how to backup a flash drive. I wanted to tell them how I used a program to do that and I normally do it on Fridays. I wanted to tell them that I had never lost my drive and I'm an IT major. I wanted to make them feel my lost and inspire them to search! But I couldn't. They were only getting one sad song from me.

R, my best friend, said I’ll never forget this. I wanted to punch him in the face and ask if he’d forget that. This morning I had a dream I found the little black store of memory. I’d never been more upset that my eyes opened. After an hour of using clues from my dream to rip apart my room, I surrendered.

At first I blamed karma. Though I don’t believe in it, I figure I had it coming after my Thursday night full of carnal indulgence. Murphy ’s Law was second in the line up. But to its credit, I would’ve lost more than just my drive. Everything happens for a reason, someone said. I believe in that, but it doesn't come close to resolution my dream state granted.
